Board Meeting - Property Committee offers two options to repair the belfry/steeple
At the October 13, 2011 Board meeting, Acting Property Ministry Chairman Bill Luke proposed two options for the repair of the tornado and hurricane damage to the belfry.
Option 1 is to remove the steeple and belfry, repair the flooring in the belfry, rebuild the belfry in a manner similar to the current appearance, but place the bell on a display at ground level and replace the steeple. The bell weights about 1500 pounds and will not be rung because of community resistance. The weight saving on the tower would be significant. The estimated cost for this option is $34,900 (correction) and the church would appear essentially as shown below.
Option 2 is to remove the steeple and belfry and place the bell on a ground level display. The belfry would not be rebuild and the flooring would need much less repair. The steeple would then be placed direcly on the tower. The cost of this option is estimated as $8,600 (correction). The majority of the cost difference arises from the time and material and rental costs for scaffolding required by OSHA to work atop the tower, The church would have an appearance similar to the phototgraph shown below.
The Board voted by a wide majority to use Option 2. Additional information and details will be posted and available in the Narthex and Fellowship Hall.
